Thematic, Project-based Courses

We don’t teach to the test. We teach to the world’s most pressing problems. Our problem-based courses are thematic and sequential, forming connections across all academic areas.

Freshman Courses

STEAM: Global Resources

Freshman year, students examine climate change and its impact on basic resources needed to sustain human life. Curriculum focus on SDG 13, and its aim to improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning. SDG13-GLO-13.3

Humanities: Global Context

Freshman year, students receive an introduction to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which serve as a foundation for their four years at GCE Lab School. SDGs 1-17

Sophomore Courses

STEAM: Global Health

Sophomore year, students investigate health on personal, public, and global scales. With a focus on SDG 3 to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, students examine ways to keep our growing global community healthy. SDG 3

Humanities: Global Voices

Sophomore year, students focus on SDG 11, to strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

Junior Courses

STEAM: Global Design

Junior year, students focus on sustainable design, infrastructure, and innovation, examining ways to achieve SDGs 9 and 11.

Humanities: Global Government

Junior year, students focus on Goal 16, to develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels

Senior Courses

STEAM: Global Enterprise

Senior year, students focus on how to participate in a dynamic economy on personal, community, national, and international levels. With an emphasis on SDG 8, students investigate avenues for promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth and full and productive employment. SDG 8

Humanities: Global Vision

Senior year, students customize their investigations into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, relating their action projects to Goal(s) of their choosing. SDGs 1-17

Electives

Mastery Projects

Mastery Projects are five-to-eight lesson micro-courses. Teacher guides and resources are included to support seamless integration of project-based learning and enhance single-subject classes with globally relevant, thematic learning journeys.

These open source projects are available to teachers to supplement traditional curriculum, and to infuse their learning environment with contextualized, applicable, and experiential calls to action. Mastery Projects are invitations for students to engage with the world at the same level as teachers: as global citizens.
