The Challenge:
- What does it take to bring together a complete vision for a show meant for the stage?
- Knowing that each subject expert will bring their own specialties, how does a production come together to share the same aesthetic?
View the theatre through the lenses of props, set, lighting, sound, and costumes as you bring together disciplines and design elements into a cohesive showpiece. Along the way, you will balance the practical (stage directions and text) and the metaphorical (subtext and themes) in order to immerse your audience within the world you have created.

Explore Issues that Matter
With the foundation of a story worth telling, you will envision that story through the lens of designers as they transform the play from a dream to a reality. Theater has the power to inform but also to provide context and create empathy for the viewers. In this way, you will be able to use the power of the stage and invite your audience into a new world. Consider how you might use the stage to take a stand for (what goes here? Could be a connection to SDGs)
Real-World Scenarios
We will work with theaters throughout Chicago during these three weeks. In the past, GCE has partnered with Goodman Theater, Free Street Theater, and Steppenwolf Theater. We look forward to continuing to grow in our relationships with theaters across the city.
Students will engage with designers who are working professionals in Chicago theater, doing the work we are exploring throughout the three-week class.
